I, Runner

Fall 50, Finish Line, 2010

I’ve always been a runner, and in the past I’ve been known to run some long distances. But lately, I’ve gone through a bit of a dry spell — I haven’t run more than 13.1 miles since last October. Burn out, you ask? Lack of motivation, perhaps?

Maybe a little bit of each, but it really has more to do with a lack of training time. So for the past three months, I’ve been getting up before the sun to put in my miles before the real day begins.

So now this weekend I’ll be hitting the pavement in the Los Angeles Half-Marathon (this year on a brand-new course). I don’t expect to break any personal records, but it’s a trial run for what I hope will be a vigorous 2012 race season.

This bow tie thing, it seems to be catching on.

The Eleventh Doctor's Bowtie from ThinkGeek

Even Doctors are wearing bow ties now.

Ever since I posted How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Tie a Bow Tie back in June, I’ve been noticing bow ties showing up everywhere.

Even doctors are wearing them, and now, thanks to ThinkGeek and this officially licensed prop replica of the 11th Doctor’s Bow Tie, so can you.

For a mere $29.99, this fancy bit of neck wear even comes with handy manual that includes tying instructions, just in case. But don’t worry about tying it textbook (or manual) perfect — if your bow tie doesn’t look spot-on, then you tied it properly.

Still Life: Sad Clown with Dumpster

Still Life: Sad Clown with Dumpster

While biking my way to CicLAVia 2011, I noticed this painting of a sad clown—well, maybe he’s more disgruntled or annoyed, but definitely not happy—discarded amidst a quartet of dumpsters in the Montecito Heights Recreation Center.

When I returned four hours later, the painting was no longer there (and it wasn’t trash day). I choose to believe it found a home, and that, perhaps, it’s a bit less sad.
