7 Crazy Coffee Contraptions

Seriously Weird and Wonderful Ways to Make Coffee

Making coffee is neither difficult nor does it have to be expensive. You can make a perfect cup of coffee in under five minutes with a $20 Hario v60 Ceramic Dripper Cone and a $28 dollar Hario v60 Range Server.

But some folks like to fancy things up beyond reason, and here are seven crazy coffee contraptions that look mighty stylish and will set you back a good bit of money but won’t necessarily make a better cup of coffee.

Kone Coffee Brewer

Kone Coffee Brewer

This is a minimalist device that uses the pour-over method to brew a small batch of coffee. I kind of like this one, but at $120, it’s a little on the expensive side. And it gets even more expensive if you go in for their $125 gold filter.

Ratio Eight

This is like a pourover Mr. Coffee that claims to be “a new paragon in coffee, designed to strike the ideal balance between beauty and performance.” And for $595, it had better be all that and more.

Iikone MK1 Coffee Brewer

The highly designed Iikone Brewer bills itself as”like no other.” However, it employs the familiar pour-over technique to brew a cup of coffee, but its $700 price tag puts it well out of the range of many a humble coffee-drinker. That price only includes the metal stand—you’ve got to provide your own cup or carafe.

Gina Smart Coffeemaker

It’s smart because it uses your smartphone. Get it? But other than that, this high-tech device (it has its own built-in digital scale!) will let you make coffee using three different techniques—pour over, immersion, and cold brew. The only drawback, besides the recommended retail price of $245, is that it’s a Kickstarter project, so it doesn’t yet exist. It’s scheduled to ship in April 2017.

Spinn Coffeemaker

Spinn

Spinn promises “quality coffee made easy.” We all know that making coffee isn’t all that difficult, however this machine, which bills itself as the first bean-to-cup coffee maker (I don’t think this is true), can make everything from a single espresso or cup of coffee to a whole carafe of the stuff. What range! And yes, there’s an app. All that for only $500.

I have yet to venture into the world of vacuum-brewing coffee, but when I do, it just might be with this mighty fancy steampunk-looking contraption. Although it looks like one of the more expensive devices on this list, it’s a mere $160.

Aviatore Veloce TurboJet 100

Aviatore Veloce

Why make espresso with any old machine when this thing exists. But how much is it? It seems to be priced at the “if you have to ask, you can’t afford it” price point.
