Look Out Below! A Cautionary Tale

I’ve logged a lot of hours driving up the Angeles Crest Highway on my way to any number of adventures in the Angeles National Forest. It’s a fun road to drive and, as you climb from near sea-level to altitudes of 5,000 feet and higher, it offers some really fantastic views of the Los Angeles basin far below.

It’s critical to always remember one thing when you’re driving along a mountain road — you’re on a mountain, and if you lose control of your vehicle, there’s a very real chance you’ll drive right off of it, like this gent did in January, 2015.

Spoiler: he lived. He’s extremely lucky he landed where he did — his vehicle came to rest on a concrete drainage pipe. The fall is a lot worse in many other spots along the Angeles Crest Highway.
