Essential Reading: Ultimate Hiker’s Gear Guide 2nd Edition
New Edition of an Essential Hiking Guide
One of the best resources I used to plan my 2012 thru-hike of the John Muir Trail was Andrew Skurka’s Ultimate Hiker’s Gear Guide: Tools and Techniques to Hit the Trail. I found the book so invaluable, that it was the first book I included in the Fordsbasement Adventure Library.
Over time, things have a tendency to change. Hiking is no exception to this. So Skurka released an updated version of his essential guide. The Ultimate Hiker’s Gear Guide, Second Edition: Tools and Techniques to Hit the Trail covers some of the things that have changed since the book was first published.
Ultimate Hiker’s Gear Guide 2nd Edition: A Fresh Look at Planning
This second edition features 16 new pages that take a fresh look at aspects of planning a long hike, such as food on the trail (one of the trickiest aspects to dial in) and a whole series of updated gear recommendations.
If you don’t have a copy of this essential volume, then The Ultimate Hiker’s Gear Guide, Second Edition is a great place to start planning your hike. Trust me—you’ll learn things that will make the whole trip much easier and a lot more enjoyable. If you already own a copy of the book, the second edition isn’t necessary, but it does offer a good amount of new and updated information that hikers of all skill levels may find useful.
