New Edition of an Essential Hiking Guide
One of the best resources I used to plan my 2012 thru-hike of the John Muir Trail was Andrew Skurka’s Ultimate Hiker’s Gear Guide: Tools and Techniques to Hit the Trail. I found the book so invaluable, that it was the first book I included in the Fordsbasement Adventure Library.
However, over time, things have a tendency to change. Hiking is no exception to this. To cover some of the things that have changed since the book was first published, Skurka recently released an updated version, The Ultimate Hiker’s Gear Guide, Second Edition: Tools and Techniques to Hit the Trail. This second edition features 16 new pages that take a fresh look at aspects of planning a long hike, such as food on the trail (one of the trickiest aspects to dial in) and a whole series of updated gear recommendations.
If you don’t have a copy of this essential volume, then The Ultimate Hiker’s Gear Guide, Second Edition is a great place to start planning your hike. Trust me—you’ll learn things that will make the whole trip much easier and a lot more enjoyable. If you already own a copy of the book, the second edition isn’t necessary, but it does offer a good amount of new and updated information that hikers of all skill levels may find useful.
