The Ultimate John Muir Trail Preparation Guide
Check out this fantastic guide to JMT hike planning.
If you’ve always wanted to hike the JMT, do yourself a favor and bookmark Trail to Summit’s John Muir Trail Preparation Guide.
Allison Nadler at Trail to Summit has put together a really comprehensive guide of what you need to do to fully prepare yourself for a thru-hike of the John Muir Trail.
She covers everything from getting the permit to how to get to the trailhead to useful media like books, maps, forums, and blogs (in which she—full disclosure—lists my complete trail journal here on Fordsbasement, for which I’m very grateful).
She also goes into how to train for your hike (“The only way to really get in hiking shape is to hike!”), where to get great deals on the best gear, how and where to resupply (a fine art in itself). She even breaks down the different bear canisters in minute, infographic-style detail.
There’s good advice here for beginners and veteran hikers alike. So if you’re even thinking about hiking the JMT — or any trail, really — go read the Ultimate John Muir Trail Preparation Guide.
